AW-2015 TRANSHUMAN

Trans-Humanism is a movement that embraces the enhancement of humans through technology. Bionics, nano-technology, artificial intelligence and genetic engineering are some of the main sciences that are being used to achieve this post human condition. In my work, the unconventional use of materials and the abstraction of the female figure are key factors for my expression of the transhumanist future.

Two of the technologies that I specifically explored in my research are genetic engineering and bionics. Genetic engineering can resolve physical deficiencies and augment resistance in harsh environments. Mechanical enhancement of people’s physical abilities through the implantation of bionic limbs is already happening alongside with the realisation that robots have become increasingly intelligent. Humans will gradually become more mechanical than organic.

In the collection I explore genetic experimentation through the use of vegetable tanned leather as a representation of resilient skin, framing it with an outline of metallic dyed leather to produce a look that is both organic and robotic.

The silhouettes in this collection are influenced by a 1950s Christian Dior aesthetic because it evokes a sense of high fashion and glamour, as well as emphasising the exaggerated proportionality. This parallels the essence of transhuman augmentation in the present tense. The merging of these concepts and a careful consideration of market requirements, and construction viability of the product have also been the focal points to developing my designs.

Transhuman Autumn Winter 2015 is about moving forward, augmenting the body, incorporating beauty techniques that have been learned in the past, and developing them to fit into a future with endless possibilities.
